Between 12 and 18 months, children gain greater autonomy in their movements. For example, if you lay them on their back, they are already able to roll over. They can walk independently and, if they fall, they are able to stand up without assistance. For this reason, it is essential to find ways to stimulate psychomotor development.
Everything they have learned so far is consolidated during this stage, but there are always activities, games, or educational toys that can further promote mobility and confidence in their movements.
This stage is also characterized by curiosity and exploration of the objects around them. At this age, a child’s perception of the world is highly experimental. It is very common to see them trying new ways of playing with objects.
Here are some suggestions of activities to stimulate psychomotor development:
- Toys that the child can push or move, such as a car, animal, or train.
- Toys with movement, powered by batteries or pull strings.
Playing with modeling clay to develop fine motor skills.
- Encourage the child to walk independently. Stand in front of them with your arms open to give them a greater sense of security.
- A very fun exercise is to stack cushions of different shapes and sizes on the floor like steps, allowing the child to climb over them.
Using animal books, show them different animals, encourage them to imitate them and reproduce their sounds.
- Encourage them to kick a small ball, holding their hand to prevent them from falling.
