How to Keep Kids Entertained on a Car Trip!

Reading time: 3 minutes ⏱

As the holidays approach, many families travel to their destinations, where the car journey is part of the overall experience for a well-deserved break.

A long trip can be beneficial in two ways: on one hand, it’s ideal for quality family moments, interesting conversations, and fun activities; on the other hand, it’s a perfect opportunity for kids to spend some time in their own heads, letting their imagination run wild while watching the scenery.

However, keeping little ones entertained in a car for hours isn’t always easy. Therefore, we present a list of suggestions and ways to spend time together as a family on a long car trip:

  1. Co-pilots

Give them a (classic) map with the itinerary so they can follow the trip and help with directions.

2. Guessing Game

A classic, very simple game with no accessories. Example: “I see something blue that starts with the letter ‘E’.

3. Hands-On Activities

Bring notebooks, pencils, or coloring pens and ask them to draw something [find our painting supplies and coloring books here]

TIP: Suggest themes for example, ask them to draw what they want to do on vacation.

4. Ask Truck Drivers to Honk

CHALLENGE: How many can they get in 10 minutes?

5. Practice Math

Count cars or animals (keeping track as you go).

6. Encourage Imagination

Look for shapes in the clouds.

7. Read a Book

Always a great option to pass the time and promote reading skills. It also stimulates children’s imagination [Discover our story and adventure books here].

8.Warm Up Your Voice

Sing or learn a song.

9. Alphabet Game

A very simple game that can keep kids busy for hours! Find a street sign or building sign starting with the letter “A.” The game continues until all letters of the alphabet are covered. The winner is the one who finds the most signs or placards for all the letters of the alphabet.

10. Educational Quiz

There’s no better way to keep kids occupied while teaching them something than with an educational quiz. A perfect topic for this type of quiz is to ask questions about your trip destination to learn more about the history of the city and/or country you are visiting.

TIP: you can look up the information in a travel guide, for example.
